Ramadan Kareem!!
Taraweeh is a special prayer that Muslims perform during the month of Ramadan. It is an optional prayer that is performed after the obligatory prayer of Isha. Taraweeh is also known as Qiyam ul Layl, which means standing at night, because it is performed at night, usually after Isha.
The origin of Taraweeh prayer can be traced back to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who established it during the second year of his caliphate. According to a hadith reported by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever prays during the nights of Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari)
Taraweeh prayer consists of a series of units of prayer called rak’ahs. The number of rak’ahs can vary between different Islamic schools of thought, but it is usually between 8 to 20 rak’ahs. In each rak’ah, a specific portion of the Quran is recited, and the prayer is concluded with a special supplication called dua qunoot.
The practice of Taraweeh is supported by several Quranic verses, which encourage Muslims to spend their nights in worship during the month of Ramadan. For example, Allah says in the Quran, “The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.” (2:185)
Another Quranic verse that supports the practice of Taraweeh is, “Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Quran of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.” (17:78)
In Overall, Taraweeh is an optional prayer that Muslims perform during the month of Ramadan, and it is supported by the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and several Quranic verses. It is an opportunity for Muslims to spend their nights in worship and seek the forgiveness and mercy of Allah.
